I remember those times, and I can honestly tell you that those memories make my breathing change and my heart begin to race!
I have taken my love for education and experience with learners of all types, and made my 15 min, a day reading booster to empower you to make a difference in your child's reading. There is no time like the present to give your child a boost in reading, help support remediation, or just learn more about what works.
Sooo...... your child is having trouble reading or your maybe your child has been given a diagnosis and you are feeling a little lost as to what you should do? I WAS there! I was actually all of the above, and I felt very alone and I did not really know what the best thing to do was. "Read more" they said , Set aside 15 minutes a day to read", they said, "Get a tutor" they said. Do you know how hard it is to find a tutor? And it is important to find the right one! Do you know how hard it is to make an active boy sit down and read for 15 minutes when you can visibly see that he can't sit still or he gets a headache 3 minutes into reading?
I am not going to take up your time telling you all about me, but somehow I feel a nudge or calling if you will to share with you what I learned the hard way. You see I have 11 years of classroom experience teaching children to read and 3 years working with children with dyslexia, ADD, and dysgraphia (Oh yea and I may or may not have some time as a parent of 2 of the 3 of these) I am actively pursuing membership to the Orton Gillingham Academy through coursework and a practicum. I have trained under an amazing mentor and Fellow of Orton Gillingham Academy and this is where many of my amazing tips and tools have come from. I have taken the best of the best of the tools and techniques that I have learned to share with you so that you may be able to take a little off of your plate.
What if I told you there was a better way? What if I told you that you can boost your child's reading in 15 minutes a day? Well, after many years in the classroom, and then finally getting the opportunity to study under an Orton Gillingham Fellow, I have taken pieces of what I have learned and put it together to make what I call my 15 Min. a Day Reading Booster.
Although I believe any child with an identification such as dyslexia needs true therapy and intervention with an Orton Gillingham Tutor, I believe that these are some things that you can do at home to help. Knowledge is power and learning some of these things can help you support your student. Even with the intervention my child received, these tools could have made a bigger impact.
